Sierra Quilt Guild Activities 2008

2008 Guild Challenge

I have good news and I have bad news.  The good news is there is a wide range of possibilities for your challenge project.  You can make whatever you want!  The bad news is your focus fabric will be sight unseen at the time of your purchase.  I have purchased materials for you to buy for $4.00.  You will get a one-yard piece of material for your purchase.  They are all different materials.  They will be in- paper bags so you can't see what you're getting.  You can add up to 4 materials but you must use at least a 12 x 12 inch piece of the focus fabric.  You can cut it up into little itty bitty pieces if you like.  A representational piece of fabric will be displayed at the September meeting along with the finished projects so everyone can see what you started with.  Hope this sounds like fun and a lot of you enter.  If you have any questions, please give me a call. Thanks, Marna Ferreira

A quilt show entry form must be submitted by the August deadline.  Photos are not required.

Community Activities

The Community Quilts Project has been in existence for at least 10 years. Its purpose is to promote quilting, educate the community about quilting and return something to the community. Over the years we have donated many quilts to local organizations, helped some people teach school children quilting, put on quilting demonstrations for the community and donated quilts for fundraisers. Also, we have used our sewing skills to help local organizations, such as the Humane Society, by making dog vests, which were used by the Society for money-making projects.

Last year we donated a number of quilts: 18 to Interfaith Social Services, seven each to Beverly Convalescent Hospital, Mountain Women's Resources and Tuolumne County Victim-Witness. Christmas Partners received about 150 dolly quilts and 70 crib size quilts, while the Senior Center was given several quilts to hand out to persons in need; we also donated another quilt that the Senior Center used for fund-raising project.

Those who want to contribute to the Project meet each Tuesday afternoon (1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.) at the Senior Center to create the quilts, which are made from materials donated by individuals and the Guild. Not only are quilts finished off, but kits are made up to be distributed to Guild members who complete them at home; some guild members also donate quilts that they have made at home from their own "stash."

Dolly quilts are 22" x 26" and crib quilts are 40" x 50". The larger quilts are kept until after the September Show and then sorted and distributed to the different organizations.

Humane Society and the Spay and Neuter Group of Tuolumne County

Over the years we have supplied dog vests, quilts, and wall hangings to the Humane Society and Spay and Neuter Group of Tuolumne County for their fund raising events. If you are interested in donating a quilt to the Humane Society, please contact quilt@sierraquiltguild.com for more information.

Sew ‘N’ Sews Monthly Sewing Day

The SEW ‘N’ SEWS would like to invite anyone who wants to sew to bring their sewing machine and sew with us each month. We typically meet the first Monday of the month – except we skip July and September and meet twice in June and August (the first Monday and last Monday in those months).

Dues for 4 months at a time are $20.  That is only $5 a month to have a big place to sew, lay out big quilts, put them on the wall and get things done that we can't get done at home. If you just want to come and do hand sewing that is fine also.  Of course we do have time for lunch and lots of visiting. If you just want to come on an occasional basis it would be $7 a time.

The room at the Humane Society is open and ours from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Come anytime; stay as long as you want.  We usually go to lunch about 12:00.  If no one is there right at 9:00 a.m. we will be there eventually....  The only rule we have for this group is to do what you want, have a good visit, and join us for lunch!

Contact quilt@sierraquiltguild.com for more information about the Sew ‘N’ Sews Monthly Sewing Day.

Quilt Camp

Twice a year members of our guild are invited to go to Quilt Camp. This is a very popular activity and you need to sign up early to reserve a space. We hold our camp at Old Oak Ranch in Sonora. Rooms and meals are included in the cost of $185. All you need to bring are your projects, sewing machine, and a willingness to share and talk quilting for five days. Contact quilt@sierraquiltguild.com for the dates of the next camp and availability.
